In this presentation, Dr Debra Russell explores key research and approaches that can be used to enhance educational interpreting practice in relation to preparation.
Dr Russell discusses the benefit of preparation, the links between preparation and quality interpreting, strategies on how to prepare for classroom interpreting and communication and advocacy approaches to support preparation in a classroom context.
Participants will gain a practical understanding of how quality interpreting practice can lead to an interpretation that is more effective for the learner and supports the goals of the teaching environment.

Presenters

Debra Russell, PhD, is a Canadian certified interpreter, educator and researcher. As the previous David Peikoff Chair of Deaf Studies, at the University of Alberta, her research interests include mediated education with interpreters, interpreting in legal settings and with legal discourse, and Deaf-hearing interpreter teams. She is well published and has presented in 65 countries. Her interpreting practice spans over thirty years, and continues to focus on medical, legal, mental health and employment settings. She is the past President of the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI), and served as a Commissioner for the Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education (CCIE) from 2016-2022.
