Learning Outcomes

Participants will:

• Understand broadly how children learn language

• Examine how deaf children learn Auslan, and literacy pathways

• Consider Theory of Mind and executive functioning in deaf children

• Understand the impact of an interpreter in the classroom, mediated instruction and the considerations when working with students with language delay and or deprivation.

Presenters

Karin O’Reilly has worked in the deafness field for over 32 years. She is a NAATI professionally certified Auslan-English Interpreter, Teacher of the Deaf and CODA. Karin currently works as a Principal Advisor Auslan for the Far North Queensland region Department of Education where she supervises a team of staff and provides support to schools on differentiating the curriculum for deaf and hard of hearing students that use Auslan. Karin has recently completed a PhD thesis through the University of Queensland which investigated advanced theory of mind performance in native and late signing populations.
