Educational Interpreting: creating environments where deaf children thrive

Dr Debra Russell explores the role of educational interpreters in creating bilingual and bimodal quality education for DHH learners.

Description

In this presentation, Dr Debra Russell offers educational interpreters and other deaf education professionals a glimpse into the complexity of working with deaf children, beginning with an examination of the factors that can be challenging in creating bilingual and bimodal quality education.

By examining the ways in which an educational interpreter interacts with the teaching and learning activities, the presentation explores the components of meaningful education, and strategies that can enhance the interpretation provided, in terms of social, academic and intellectual engagement. Dr Russell also explores standards for educational interpreters that are being piloted in Australia as part of the Victorian Deaf Education Institute’s Educational Interpreter Project. Finally, the presentation examines the features of accurate and effective educational interpreting and the use of rubrics when analysing one's work.
